Every company has a story about how it came to be. For Lodestone, it started not as software, but as a simple playbook. I had noticed that in so many fields - sales, revenue, operations - there were "playbooks" filled with best practices, frameworks, and lessons learned. But oddly, nothing like that seemed to exist for product management, despite how challenging and complex this role can be. So, I set out to write one. That playbook, intended as a guide to navigating the world of product management, went through several rounds of peer review. And it was during one of those conversations - with a trusted technology leader - that the idea first emerged: "You know," they said, "this should really be software." Looking back, that moment was the spark that turned Lodestone from an idea into a real product.
Before Lodestone was what it is today, it started as a roadmap creation tool with a built-in presentation export feature. As a product executive, I knew firsthand how much time product leaders spend crafting slide decks to present roadmaps and strategies to stakeholders. I also knew how hard it is to structure those presentations in a way that brings everyone along on the journey. And it wasn’t just me. Talking to other product leaders, it became obvious that this was a shared pain point - one that nobody had solved well. So that's what we set out to do first: make it easier to create and share compelling product roadmaps and strategies, in a way that gets teams aligned.
Picking a name was surprisingly easy once we hit on the right metaphor. A lodestone is a naturally magnetic rock that ancient explorers used as a compass to find their way. Product management often feels like being lost in a forest without a map. You're constantly bombarded with feedback, data points, and opinions pulling you in different directions. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, unsure of the right next step. Our hope is that Lodestone helps product teams find their way - clarifying the right things to do, the right direction to head, and the right story to tell to bring everyone along. We had a few other name ideas - ProductSherpa, WayFinder - but once "Lodestone" came up, we knew we had found our compass.
At our core, we believe product management is about figuring out the right thing for the right user at the right time. But that's easier said than done. Teams are under constant pressure, often forced to make decisions without all the information they need. And when those bets don’t pay off, it leads to wasted resources, missed opportunities, and burned-out teams. Lodestone is built to help product teams avoid that waste - so they can move faster, get more done, and feel confident about the direction they’re heading.
Most product management tools focus on managing work - ticket tracking, backlogs, task lists. Those are important, but what often gets overlooked is the need to align stakeholders around the work you're doing and why you're doing it. That’s why one of the things we’re proudest of is how easily Lodestone lets users export their work into beautiful, ready-to-share presentations. Whether you're working on a feature, a roadmap, or an entire product strategy, you can tell a compelling story that gets buy-in and builds alignment.
Our early users have been incredible in validating that we're on the right track. Hearing feedback like "this saved me hours preparing for my roadmap presentation" and "this was the first time I felt confident presenting our strategy" is what keeps us going. What excites me most about Lodestone’s future is helping product teams feel less overwhelmed - so they’re not drowning in to-dos and second-guessing their decisions. I’ve been there. I’ve felt that weight. And I want to build tools that help lift it.
At Lodestone, we’re here to help product teams move faster, get more done, and tell better stories about where they’re headed and why. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that finding the right path - and getting others to follow you down it - is what makes all the difference. Thanks for reading our story. We’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to help more teams find their way.
